About

A swimming pool or hot tub is a small water-treatment plant, a pump-and-plumbing system and an electrical installation, all in your backyard. Most of the time you don’t think about any of it. Then the water turns cloudy, a pump gets loud or a heater stops heating, and you need to understand what is going on, fast.

Pool Systems Explained answers two questions for every system in a typical pool or hot tub: how does it work, and why is it doing that. We explain the parts, what normally goes wrong, what an owner can safely check, and when the right move is to call a qualified pool professional or electrician.

What we cover

  • Pumps, filters, plumbing and valves.
  • Water chemistry and sanitizing.
  • Heaters, heat pumps and solar heating.
  • Covers, cleaners and automation.
  • Hot tubs and spas.
  • Equipment and water safety.

How we make our guides

  • Diagrams, not stock photos. Our guides are built around simplified illustrations that show how a system works. Treat them as explanatory drawings rather than exact replicas of any specific brand or model.
  • Safety first. Electricity near water, pool chemicals and the risk of drowning are real hazards. When a job is not safe for an owner to do alone, we say so plainly.
  • Plain language. We explain the technical terms the first time we use them.
